My Philosophy

Anyone can experience emotional troubles in their lives, and often seeking therapy can be a positive step allowing one to move forward, to resolve difficulties and reconcile problems, even if they have been struggling for some time.

Having the opportunity to seek therapy means not having to cope alone. As well as providing a space where one can feel understood and supported, therapy can provide insight and understanding, as well as helping to make changes to unhelpful patterns of behaviour. This can help to instigate fundamental changes in how you feel.

My approach begins with the development of trust and providing a space where a client can feel safe enough to begin exploring parts of their mind which they may have otherwise felt difficult to think or talk about.  I work from an integrated approach, using psychodynamic theory to guide understanding, person-centred principles of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard, and CBT techniques to focus on behavioural change.

Depending on a client’s difficulty, and what feels a better fit for them, I can adjust my approach to meet a client’s needs at a particular time.  For example, sometimes someone may want to stop compulsive behaviours and reduce anxiety, whilst others will also be interested in understanding the often complex dynamics, whether internally or between them and other people, which may be at the heart of their symptoms.

Motivation

Being able to sit with someone and help them through their emotional pain is reward enough from my clinical work.  I find clients inspiring in their ability to progress, and a lot of my motivation comes from seeing this alongside learning from my clients.
