Philosophy
Sometimes it can be hard to achieve what you really want in life, to take a risk and override the fear of the unknown – especially if things in the past haven’t always gone according to plan.
It's all too easy to lose faith in your own abilities and you may find it almost impossible to believe that life will eventually work out for the best. Erring on the side of caution may seem more sensible than gambling stability—even if that stability goes hand in hand with unhappiness.
Sometimes life will rock its own
boat, with simple chance events resulting in change and opportunity. However most of the time it’s up to us to bring about change. That's a really tough call if your emotions are raging or you're feeling totally stuck in a pattern of feeling or behaviour. It's not always something you can do alone – which is when therapy can be especially helpful.
Approach
Therapy is not something that I 'decide' or something that is 'done' to you – it is a shared experience, and one that is most successful when we start to work on it together. I’ve trained in a number of different approaches, but as each type of therapy is different, so is each person. No one size fits all. My skill is in finding the format and the language that works best for you.
Whether I’m working with individuals or with couples, I try to put my true self into the relationship, sharing my own life experience whenever it's appropriate. But ultimately this is your space to recognise and overcome the barriers that are preventing you from making the best of the possibilities that life offers us all.
Motivation
I began my career as an accountant but very soon realised that I needed to do something with more human meaning. That’s what drew me to therapy as a profession and is what keeps me doing it today.
It is the unique privilege of my profession to be able, little by little, to get to know a person as an individual, to share in the intricacies of their life and the experiences they bring to each session. To me it's both fascinating and exciting to witness someone begin to see the world from a different perspective, and then to start effecting real changes in their life.
The world is changing, and life in today’s society presents a unique set of challenges. Problems that might have existed 20 or 30 years ago are no longer relevant. For most of us life is no longer about fighting for basic survival – instead it’s about finding purpose and meaning in a complicated and confusing world.
